Shobna Gulati plays Sunita Alahan in Corrie

Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati has abandoned Twitter because of a stream of racist taunts on the social networking site.

Shobna, who plays Sunita Alahan in the Manchester-based soap, just didn't want to read the nasty messages.

'Surprised at the racial abuse and desire to try and hurt people for no reason,' Shobna, 44, Tweeted, though she hoped things would improve.

'I love this twitter I like chatting with like minded folk but overt racism ...well that can't be tolerated.

'Horrid ... I don't get it and it saddens me.'

The soap star finally announced last night to her 18,000+ followers - who she refers to as 'tweet ta di do das' - that she'd be abandoning her account.

'Hey tweet ta di do das thanks for the follows,' Shobna posted. 'Thanks for the banter I've enjoyed my time on twitter. Over and out.'
